I did my best to prevent her being elected to the Council in a bye-election in Lindsay Ward round about 1950
Donald. I did not know the lady in question. All I can say is, we, and I am as bad as the next, criticize councillors in relation to the decisions that they make, but we ourselves, never put ourselves out, to stand for public office. So the but must stop with us. We are the blameworthy.
Sorry for leaving out the extra "t", on but
Alberet.I was not against councillors.Iwas enthusiastic for her opponent.I was merely making a historical observation
ethel naylor was my mothers sister so that makes her my aunt.she was over 90 years old when she died.
Ethel was my great grandma I was only 1 years old when she was the first lady major of Wigan. She had been councillor all her life and was a very spirited woman. She was married 3 times . Firstly to my great grandad Joe twice in both the Catholic and Church of England. Joe was Catholic. She married again in 1984 when I was 13 at St Stephens on Whelley. She learned to swim at 71 when she was a major. She returned to work at Mabs Cross petrol pumps after the birth of her first daughter Elise. Her second daughter was not born till 24 years later. I am proud of her influence and her attitude
