I remember parking here when I worked at John England , many moons ago
Happy memories when the Fair came to town and took over the whole of the Market Square, can still smell the black peas.
I wonder where all those cobbles ended up..to think our grandparents tread on those..how I wish I had a couple of them.
Wow! I just had a flashback of going into Smith's to make the arrangements for my flight to Canada in 1966!
I remember this cobbled space being covered by Wigan Fair back in the late 1940s early 50s ,busy with people,lights,colour....alive !
So many memories of this car park, I used to walk this way on the way to school, also I can remember when the fair used to be there, long time ago.
Walking over, going to the Deanery in the 70s
You could hardly move on here on Whit Monday when 5 parishes congregated plus the bands and the banners. Something that stays with you forever.
Wasn't the Christmas tree on the square at one time?
I remember being on one of the fair's rides [I think it was the big wheel] in the late fifties and watching Wigan RL coach make its way down Market Street with the challenge cup! I'd give anything to travel back to those times for just one day! Anyone got a time machine going cheap?
Tuddy, yes, the Christmas Tree was on the Market Square, usually on the Market Street side near the end of the Petticoat Lane/Leyland Paint Shop arcade.
Maureen, the majority of those sett cobbles ended up as the foundations for the Council Building Department offices at the bottom of Christopher Street Ince, lorries were coming all day dumping them to fill in what I was told was once an old railway sidings embankment.
Thank you Cyril..I wish I had been there as I say just to have a couple of them...thank you again.
That's a bit of a walk Daisy! When I worked at John Englands I used to park at John Englands.
