It doesn't seem all that long ago actually does it Maurice ?, but blimey, look at the traffic ( or absence of ) on Greenough St. Work appears to have begun on Central Park Way, so what year would that indicate ? 1986 ? Over to you.
Another typical Sunday at Central Park, told you the games been dying for years.
1988 the "new road" was built
Anyone who ever stood on those hallowed terraces and savoured the atmosphere will have many fond memories of Central Park. Who can ever forget the way the roar of anticipation grew whenever the ball made its quick-fire way out to the right wing to screams of "Give it Billy!"
Jarvo it is still a working mans game unlike football
im gonna say the year is 86/87 ive got all this scene on video and that was the first time i ever got a video camera .
Gidionfel, who can forget The March of The Gladiators
I remember it well. I used to go in the hen-pen and from there we could smell the wintergreen from the changing rooms down the tunnel! I also remember all us rugby mad kids chanting "Watch him miss it!" when the opposing team kicker was lining up his goalkick. There always seemed to be kids from the visiting team who'd come into the hen-pen with duffel bags filled with programmes they used to sell. I've still got loads from back then! On occasion, when I couldn't persuade some stranger to get me through to the Popular Stand by claiming I was his son [I know, these days...] I'd climb on the separating wall and leap over. Dreadful behaviour!
Gideonfel, alway's stood in Hen Pen think it was 3p to go in .Used to love that smell of Winter green( Horse Linement ) wafting up Tunnel. Used it myself when I was playing never made me any good but loved the smell of it.Also it kept the Fly's away.Same as you jumped over Wall and run before getting stopped. My Dad used to stand on the Douglas side but I could not see over wall so I never ran that way.Was there on Sunday with my Grandson West Stand over Tunnel but never a smell of Horse Linement these Day's .Played well good win.
LDB, when you write 'working mans game' is that your euphemism for 'not as important?'
This photograph in Greenough Street was probably taken in 1986 with only two cars, a yellow Morris Marina and gold Austin Montego. Calderbank's scrapyard, and the gent's only toilets have gone. Just out of the picture the last buildings in Greenough Street have been demolished, and included a fish and chip shop, and Rogersons's motorbikes. Central park dominates the picture with the floodlight towers, but behind is St Mary's RC church, and Mab's Cross school. The former St Paul's United Reformed church with spire is now offices.
