i wonder who they are ? .

where in Garswood was the colliery?

Garswood Hall Collieries weren't in Garswood. They were where the Three Sisters are now and the South Lancs Industrial Estate. That is where the three sisters name came from, the three massive pit spoil heaps that used to be there.

Garswood Hall fishing club used have the fishing rights to what would have been the pit lodges,the 3 sisters lake will be close to were the lodges would have been.

Wernt they called the long and narrows?

My father went to Bold after Garswood Hall closed . Fishing waters were Long and Narrows No3 lodge & Rushy Dougie will know if i missed any

That's what we used to call them Joe.

The Long and Narrows was a beltin place to fish in,I never did much in No3 though,and there were some relics around from the pit.

The long and narrows and the Lodge. were good places, to play, when we were kids. Me and susan Corbett, and sylvia Griffiths. were always, over there.

I can name two mn on the photo, Oe is Billy Appleton & Albert Partington, I know the face on the far left but cant remember his name,

The were probably more pits closed in between 1958 and 1968 then in any other 10 year period.

Maurice. I cannot recollect any disputes (strikes) in relation to these closures. I was involved in one strike, in 1949. That was in respect of miners', to be allocated concessionary coal. I left the industry in 1953. The Maypole closed later in that decade.

Hi Albert,the closures I meant were not caused by strikes,I know more about the Manchester area than Wigan,but in the 10 year period,these are pits I remember and were closed,there will be some I missed,but I know of 12,Howe bridge,Bedford,Nook,Gibfield,Chanters,Cleworth hall,Mosley common,Sandhole,Newtown,Bradford and Brackley,Astley green closed in 1970 too.

Hi Maurice. I was really referring to strikes, in pursuit of combating the closures.
