Close-up of railway tracks over the canal bridge, looking north towards Wigan Central Goods Yard (located off Darlington St East). The line continued on into Wigan Central station and at the time of this photo (1928) was under control of the LNER.
Wigan Goods Yard signalbox, on the right, survived until 1966 - regular goods traffic continued a year or two after withdrawal of passenger services on this line in 1964.
Wonder why they needed a gas light on the bridge parapet here?

I copied this photo to my desktop, but I couldn't enlarge it without it pixilating. Is there any way of getting a copy that can be enlarged?
