I think Poolstock lane is on the left of this picture. I can't recall those houses being there though
What a sad sight.....all those neighbours....all those years.
its close to mottram drive
I think the row of houses in the foreground are part of California St. In Worsley Mesnes. The row to the right of this is in Poolstock Lane, probably across from Russ's barber's shop.
The photographer was, I think, standing on the Pemberton Loop Line railway embankment, between the Tippings Arms and Scotmans Flash.
Russ's barber's shop can be see on the immediate right, next to it is the opening to Ernie Woodcock's garage and then Jimmy Houghton's shop which is now a ladies' hairdressers shop.
I was thinking the same regarding the location, Jim.
Could it be California St, which was back to back with Poolstock Lane, and butted up to the embankment of the Pemberton Loop line? It looks as though the pic could have been taken from up on the embankment.
I did think this street was demolished before 1975 though.
Russ's barbers shop on the left as we look at the photo.

That location where the houses are being demolished, is now a car park and entrance to the Greenheart Flashes of Wigan and the year is more likely to have been in 1965 not 1975, because I have a 1969 street map of Wigan and that street is not showing on the map, so it must have been gone by then.
I was mates in the 60s with the Fisher brothers from California Street - Frank and Tommy. I've tried to contact them thru WW but to no.avail. Must have been abducted by aliens. Some years ago a UFO was spotted near Marus Bridge. They must have landed in Wigan, just look at the town council. :O)
jim latham is quite right its calafornia street ,I don't know about aliens landing ,but those houses today would be refurbished and used for housing aliens ,but not the extra terrestrial type of alien.
My uncle lived in them they got knocked down between 1972and 1976
My mum Hilda Adamson was born at 21 California St in 1919 and it was good to see a picture of it even if it was in such a state. I have never seen a photograph before this one.
It this not Chapel Lane? If you look at St James church in the background this photo could have been taken just after Bradford Street on the main road near the Fox Tavern pub.
Ian, With Eckersley and Trencherfield mill to the left of St James's it must have been taken from Poolstock looking towards Wigan.
the picture would have been taken from a high vantage point,ie the pemberton loop line embankment.to the right would be waddickers flash
the far left of the photo shows two gable ends on poolstock lane which are now a barbers and a ladies hairdressers.under the church is a large timber shed that was I believe woodcocks garage.
Of course it's California St, you can see the pylons coming from Westwood Power Station.
I remember this street , as I come from Worley mesnes , I had a friend who lived there , can't remember names , it was a lovely st, they all had allotments opposite the houses ,which was backing on the railway ,
At one time wasn't there a grey hound track just after you had turned the corner, from Where Eckersley's factory was situated, and across the road from there, there was a dirt track that lead to Chapel Lane, with some sort of a warehouse at the other end, as it joined Chapel Lane.
There was a greyhound track near to Baker St as I recall
the houses in baker street that back onto parsons meadow are situated on the back straight of the dog track.just behind chadwick street was the dog tracks car park.
I lived in the house that is across from russ,s Barbers , we had a compulsory purchase order and moved out in 73/74, but they had already started pulling the houses down by then. There was a path directly to the wadikers from the back, only young but great memories.
Cant remember the name of the haulage factory directly behind the barbers?.
I grew up here, very nice amongst close family members, and nieces and uncles, nephews, grans and neighbours.
All living close by
And yes, reading the comments I did see the UFO
Then a compulsion order, I was aged eight by now.
I even had sort of a girlfriend who moved to Beech Hill, we went to landgate.
Life was never the same again, what with only a limited public transport back then.
In 1972
Now 2021 they built the road that should have been built all those years ago.
Do yes to answer the question it is california Street, and we all moved out around 1972
