I had completely forgotten about those buildings facing. Does anybody know what they were- or were they just ordinary houses. One looks to be three storey.
vb, I think one was a lawyers office.
Vb, both the buildings in full view at the bottom of the street are three storey.
The partially concealed building to the right of them, behind the tramway gantry, is the Westwood Estates office. This is still standing, and is now Franco's restaurant.
Not seen this one before. Great picture Ron.
Thankyou both - I only vaguely remember buildings a bit dilapidated in the sixties. It would stand to reason that there would be solicitor's offices there as the police station was just around the corner and the Mayor's Parlour was on that row as well I think.
There was a pawn brokers along there too, I remember the three brass balls sign hanging at the front.
Is the street running across the bottom, Rodney Street, or am I way off beam?.
You are spot on Albert. It is Rodney Street and the building was Pardey's Solicitors .
Cyril. There was a pawnbrokers in Little Chapel Lane. It ran parallel with Rodney Street, on the other side of the police station, and the borough treasurer's offices.
Thanks Albert, it must have been that one that I used to see.
No, it was Pardey's Chartered Accountants
It definitely was the office of L A
Pardey & Co. I worked there in the early sixties for a number of years.
Christine Pardey is correct and it was her father, Lewis Pardey who was a chartered accountant. His son David joined the practice in the early 60’s.
I was articled to Lewis Pardey from 1963 to 1968 when I qualified and left to work on Manchester.
Although details might be a bit vague I do remember all these buildings in the 1950’s.
In that row of houses opposite on Rodney Street (the exact building might be to the left out of view) lived a family by the name of Rowan or Roan (similar pronunciation) they had two or three daughters one was Ivy, I’m sure the others were named after plants or flowers.
She once gave me a kitten but when I took it home, my dad made me take it back!
Cyril, as mentioned, the Pawn Brokers with the three brass balls outside was on Chapel Lane almost parallel with Rodney Street further to the left of the chapel steeple that you see. The three story Wigan Printing building was next door (or two) also on the left.
