I Believe that the church in the background would be St. Josephs in Caroline Street. St. Thomas's church would be to the right and out of sight Trenchermill directly in front of the church
Sorry Pete S I know it is St. Thomas' I was Christened and Married there, St. Joseph's Church is still standing and does not have a steeple, it is not in use now but the presbytery has been made into apartments. The stained glass windows from St. Thomas' are now in St. James' Poolstock as is the altar they are in the side Chapel.
Pete, I agree the church in the background is St Joseph's with its gabled front, but it puzzles me that there seems to be the tall spire of another church behind it as well, but it's in the wrong place to be St Thomas's.
Sorry Anne, I can now see it's definitely St Thomas's!
The only other church with a steeple is St. Catherine's Scholes and that is far away. I went to St. Thomas' for years and know iit well
If you look under Schools there is a photo of St. Thomas' Church and school the school has a gable end similar to the one on St. Joseph Church. To the extreme left of the photo you can see St. Joseph's Church. Photo item #421 is very clear.
it is st Thomas church I was born and bred in pottery road the washing on the line in the backs could have well been my mams my dad and brothers worked for british waterways on the boats
from that angle it would be st joseph's that would be out of shot.
