Only ever used this station once. I was a young child, but can still remember the single compartment carriages...Don't know where we were heading...Maybe a day out at Belle Vue, perhaps?
Used to catch train at at Hindley South to watch Wigan at Central Park.Free ticket for admission to hen pen from school, a good cheap and exiting day out.
Would the building on top left be the Empress Hall?
What is that big dome building just right of the stations dome? would like to know I remember catching the train from there regular for it took you right alongside old Trafford ground when you got off the train you climbed steps and where the players main entrance is and turnstyles you were there 2 minutes same going home out of ground onto platform train was usually in back home after seeing,Dennis Violet,Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton, or has they became known
"" THE BUSBY BABES" FANTASTIC !
Never ever heard of Empress Cinema on Station Road. It's ABC Ritz Cinema more like.
Ernest, certainly looks like the 'Emp'. Garry, the Empress Building was a Dance Hall cum Snooker Hall and was almost opposite The Ritz /ABC cinema.
..Bear, the dome is part of the Station building
Was this the station where cattle arrived for their dispatching the Scholes slaughter houses?.
DerekB; Have a look at photo #2024, 3rd on 1st row, in Album, Places, Wigan Casino. I reckon it proves that it is the Empress Hall in photo above.
Yet another stupid comment, Garry. The Empress Hall became the Wigan Casino. Look at photo #2024 which shows the Ritz cinema opposite. Read the comments on photo #27180 the last in Album, Places, Wigan Casino.
goldenbear Not 100% sure But Starting from this end of the photo was an office, refreshment room,1st class waiting room, entrance hall& booking office with big dome, general waiting room, gents toilet, parcels office, station masters office, porters room, office, lamp room,I think the station masters room was changed to a ladies waiting room at some date.
