Good work, Eileen!

The girl to the right of Mrs Hodginson is (I think!)Pat Dootson? I didn't know Pat at H.A.G.S.but had the pleasure of working with her when we were both teachers at Blackrod C.P. in the late 1960's.

Back Row: Far left is Frank Marsden, from Westhoughton and far right is Roger Baron, from (then) Hall Lane.

Comment by: Eileen Thorpe (Radcliffe) on 16th March 2016 at 13:48

Thanks GP,I now remember the name Marsden but are you sure it's not Alan Marsden, were you in the same year?

Comment by: GP on 4th April 2016 at 15:50

You are probably right with the name Alan. I think the Scout between David Coop & Dennis Parkinson is possibly David Green, who lived on Wigan Road.

Comment by: Eileen Thorpe (Radcliffe) on 4th April 2016 at 19:39

Yes,David Gre ren does ring a bell,GP, did you go to HAGS?

Comment by: GP on 5th April 2016 at 11:12

Eileen, who else would know you were a Gryphon.

Comment by: Eileen Thorpe (Radcliffe) on 5th April 2016 at 19:19

Wow, what a memory you have GP!!! Yes I was a gryphon, were you? Come on ,give me a clue!!!

Comment by: GP on 6th April 2016 at 09:37

How could anyone forget a vivacious young girl like you - happy and smiling most of the time.
No. I was a Minotaur.

Comment by: Eileen Thorpe (Radcliffe) on 6th April 2016 at 13:37

I'm intrigued! Thanks for the compliment but I still can't think of anyone with the initials GP!was minotaur red? Please put me out of my misery with your name, were you in another class ,same year?

Comment by: GP on 6th April 2016 at 17:01

Eileen, though you probably won't recognise the name, I am Geoffrey Porter. I was in a different Form until the third year. I can't find my Form photograph, though I know I have it somewhere. You have taken me back almost 60 years. We had some good Teachers at HAGS, especially our Form Teacher, Mrs Holme, who taught us English - I can't watch the film "Far from the Madding Crowd" without analysing it to bits and Miss Stabler for Maths, though she was poorly for the last couple of Terms. Hope you, and the others, are keeping well.

Comment by: Eileen Thorpe (Radcliffe) on 7th April 2016 at 18:55

Of course I remember you Geoffrey, didn't you have a sister at HAGS and I think you lived in Hindey.I know we were in the same form at one point. You've jogged my memory regarding the teachers, I also recall Mr Allen (Gubby), Geography, Mr Collision, music, he threw the blackboard duster at me more than once for talking, Mr Wilshaw, Biology, andMr Leigh, chemistry, I was scared stiff of him!!!!!The only person I keep in touch with is Jackie May, she has lived in Australia for over 50 years I suppose I could waffle on forever, happy days!!!!!!!

Been racking my brains thinking about the teachers, Mr.Saint think he taught maths, miss Gaskell,PE,miss Davies, history, and who could forget Mrs Vernon who taught French, she would sweep into the classroom, her cloak flowing behind her and she always said 'bonjour mes enfants' and we had to reply 'bonjour madam',but we had the greatest respect for our teachers and did as we were told (most of the time)

Hi Geoffrey, me again, was I right about you, was Margaret Passchier and Marion Bould in the same form as you?I was great friends with both of them, I remember Marion moved to Nottingham shortly after we left school and Margaret went to live in Holland after she got married.

Comment by: GP on 10th April 2016 at 22:13

Eileen, yes I had a Sister in the year above us. I remember Jacqui May very well - she lived in Bickershaw I believe and sometimes used to walk over the fields to school. She was a Minotaur too, as was Margaret Passchier. Both she & Marion Bould both lived close to me in Hindley. Miss Davies taught me English in 2nd year, Miss Hughes for History but from 3rd year it was Mr Priestley for History. In second year Mr Weston for Maths but, as you say, Mr Frank Saint in 3rd year, then Miss Stabler in 4th & 5th years. Happy days

Comment by: Eileen Thorpe (Radcliffe) on 21st April 2016 at 15:02

Geoffrey, in Jackie May's case your spelling is wrong, I only know this because I've kept in touch with her for a long time and that's how she always spells her name, hope you don't mind me telling you. She did live in Bickershaw Lane and very often walked over the fields to school, wouldn't do it these days!!!!!
