Complete guess but could the building on the left be "Green Mount" which is close to Greenhill, if so the buildings on the right might belong to Whitley Hall.

Correcting my earlier description I now think the house on the left sits in the area described as Lower Whitley in the 1909 ordnance map, and adjoins Brock Mill Lane, on the other side of which is Woodfield, not seen but slightly lower down on the left. The "outbuildings" on the right directly face Brock Mill Lane opening, although both buildings are on Wigan Lane in this photo, I'm fairly sure they no longer exist.

If it is this area could the white building be the Cherry Gardens. It does seem too far away but it could be distorted

Phillip, I think the perspective of the photo places the "Cherry Gardens" just about where you suggest.

Phillip,when I first saw this photo,my first instinct was that the building in the distance on the left was The Cherry Gardens.

I did wonder afterwards if the " white " building might be the Plantation Gates. The road here is more level but the gates are perhaps too near the road

The "indentation" of those "farm type" buildings (Whitley Farm) on the right, from the pavement, correlates with the ordnance survey map of the 1890's, and faces the opening to Brock Mill Lane. A present day view on Google maps from this position also suggests this spot has been identified correctly, as does the shape of the building to the left on the same 1890 map. All now redeveloped.

Yes I agree with you. There was a house built sometime in the 1960 s on the corner of Brock Mill Lane. It could have been built in the space created when that house was knocked down. Just speculation. I have always thought that the facing houses seem to have walls older than they are. They could be part of the wall shown in the photo.
