A very distinguished, dignified, and eye catching, Coat of Arms. I seem to recollect, many years ago, quite a lot were displayed on blazer pockets.

When was this coat of arms granted? (Which king would have been represented)?

Why would anyone wear the council's coat of arms on their blazer pocket?

Comment by: Albert. on 26th January 2016 at 16:03

No need to apologize Jimmy, I make countless mistakes.

Comment by: Geoff on 27th January 2016 at 14:49

The arms were granted in 1922,the king is a representation of any early English monarch but is modelled on Edward 111.The old chaps I knew who wore the arms on their blazer did so because it was the rugby teams badge.

Comment by: john walsh's other mate on 29th January 2016 at 00:37

Why would a rugby team, other than the council's rugby team, use the council's coat of arms as their club badge?

Wiganers don't half love their council.

john walsh's other mate. This coat of arms is the old County Borough one , not the new Wigan Borough one dating from the 1970's. It used to be everywhere in Wigan eg the Corporation buses and many people still feel a great affection for it. It would be inappropriate for Wigan RLFC to use the "Greater Wigan Badge because Leigh RLFC are also in the expanded Met Borough. Many sports teams have used their City/ Town coat of Arms as their badge (eg Bristol City near where I now live. I agree it looks old fashioned but when you look at some of the modern logos which can be very tacky I'm not convinced some of these are any better.

The coat of arms represents the town, not the council. It,s the same reason that Manchester United wear the City of Manchester arms on their blazers.

Comment by: john walsh's only mate on 1st February 2016 at 20:34

You know what Carolaen?, my mate is correct.

The coat of arms shown wasn't awarded to the town of Wigan.
You see, coats of arms are only awarded to groups of people, never to places, and the one shown was awarded to Wigan council as a group of people, not the towns of Wigan and Pemberton or the residents of the towns.
Of course it used to be everywhere in Wigan "eg the Corporation buses", because everywhere in Wigan was run by Wigan council, including the old corporation buses.

No sports team uses their City / Town coat of Arms as their badge, because no City or Town has ever been awarded Arms.

Hear that, Geoff? No City or Town has ever been awarded Arms. Not even Wigan.

As my other mate said, "Wiganers don't half love their council".

Who's saying sports clubs are awarded arms? They just adopt them as they represent where they come from. Why have you got a bee in your bonnet about councils?

Comment by: Ewan Kerr on 2nd February 2016 at 22:49

Why would Manchester United wear the Manchester coat of arms on their blazers when they aren't in Manchester? They should wear Trafford council's.

Comment by: Geoff on 3rd February 2016 at 19:17

I'd E mail Old Trafford If I were you, they would probably know.
