Is the photograph shown, the entrance to Woodcock Street, from Market Street,? or am I way off beam.
And some outdoor market stalls, good photo of some good memories, i, like a few others of us will have seen a few pots sold in that area during the pot fair.
This photograph is a great indicator that the Galleries in combination with a refurbished Market Hall, the retention of Mesnes Street as it was, a new bus station on the site of the old and the retention of the old car park behind the Hall, for both parking and occasional public space (fair ground, Xmas Tree etc) would have worked pretty well and maintained Wigan's distinctiveness and character, instead of the bland town centre typical of many other places and which never really worked.
Spot on Albert.
You are spot on, Albert.
Yes we are now just a poor clone of so many towns. Sad that as a lad born in Gidlow Lane we now shop anywhere but Wigan.
Thank you Alan.H., and John.D. It's many a moon since I did a foot patrol down that street, passing both arcades, the smell of roasted coffee, then passing Sherrington's, to the side entrance of the Home Stores, turning right to lead myself back into Standishgate. or turning left, then right, that took into Mesnes Street. What changes have been made since those times.
Did Boon(e)s chemist used to be on the right going down Market St in the market hall extension ?
Yes Boons chemist was on the right of Market St Roy and led into the Market Hall ...I worked there for a time in the mid seventies
Anybody remember the trouser bar on the right hand corner?
Thank you Vb, i see Mr Boons son pretty often, he lives in Spain, but comes back regularly to Wigan to see his elderdy mother.
He also has an elderLy mother as well.!!!
Have often wondered what happened to Mr and Mrs Boon(e) Roy! I seem to remember a conversation with him about his Dutch ancestry. It's a long time ago!
Mr Boon(e), i think the name had an e, passed away, his wife lives at the Standish end of Wigan Lane.
