Eddie, that looks like it has ben hired for a private journey, probably a club outing, it has a placard with Bus No 2 in the window.
It looks like the older bus with the long bench seats upstairs.

Difficult to say Jimmy but does that card not read B102? At a guess I would say it was already in private ownership at this stage and was on it's way either to, or returning from a rally. There are people on here who are extremely knowledgeable about buses. Unfortunately I'm not one of them.

Many of the bus and transport rallies are/ were preceded by a vintage vehicle run. I can remember helping signpost one to Haigh Hall organised by the NW Transport Museum when my bus was housed among theirs on Burtonwood airfield in the early 80s.
I would guess that the plaque in the window shows the bus was taking part in such a run - perhaps even the Trans-Pennine Rally which takes place in August.

Was the No 5 the Wigan to Ashton bus Arthur ,If it is with what looks like winter hill in the distance it could be between Bryn and Landgate where you get the best view of winter hill in Wigan .

I don't think it's actually on a scheduled route Colin. If we're guessing at the location, my guess would be somewhere in the Marsden / Huddersfield area. That would mean the A62 over Standedge. The hills in the background would fit the picture quite reasonably, but do they do a vintage run over Standedge? I don't know. I could be miles out with that one.
