Where the traffic lights are would have been Platt Lane to the left ......I think.

Come on Veebee, make your mind up, I'm relying on you.

Vb, you're right it is Schofield Lane. On the right is Sherington's Hardware .
I can smell the shop now ,a mixture of paraffin, wood, leather and oilcloth ,outside there would be rolls of chicken wire ,oilcloth lengths of wood. I was spellbound watching them cut glass on the counter.

Mmm,mm if the block of flats is Boyswell House I don't remember the old property on the right side of Greenough St still standing and that is what is puzzling me. I think it is though!!!! When I worked at the R.O.F I used to board the coach outside McCurdy's up to 1969 and it went down Greenough St and I distinctly remember the old property even though the chemist on the corner had gone by then .... I wish someone would put me right. Don't rely on me Eddie, Tom Walsh or Scholes Malc will know!

Was Siney's barbers through the lights on the right?

Comment by: Neil on 23rd December 2015 at 23:59

Boyswell House went up in 1969 and the houses on Platt Lane that replaced the property on the right was bull built in 71/72.

Comment by: tuddy on 24th December 2015 at 03:15

Tom, Sherringtons had 4 or 5 hardware shops around Wigan. Was,nt there another hardware shop on Scholes just past the Balcarres on a corner, the name ended -- alls ?? Tommy tins, Kelly Lamps . Fire Blowers, the smell of paraffin a world long gone

Comment by: DerekB on 24th December 2015 at 13:38

AB, Sherrington's did have another shop just over the Scholes/Whelley border almost opposite Vine St. I think the hardware shop you refer to just past the Balcarres was Howard's

Comment by: DerekB on 24th December 2015 at 14:50

Before the road was re-aligned, on the opposite corner of Scholefield Lane to Sherrington's, was it Worthington's sweet and ice cream shop? Remember having my first ever ice cream from there.

Comment by: AB on 24th December 2015 at 15:24

Derek, It was Howards. I went past every day for 4 years going to Whelley School but I don't remember Sherringtons near Vine St, they had shops in Wallgate and Mesnes Rd

Comment by: Vb on 24th December 2015 at 17:47

Yes it was Worthingtons Derek B. I recall being taken in there when the sweet ration ended ......1954 I think.

AB, the Whelley Sherrington's branch was next to an off licence which, unusually for this area, was run by C&S (stood for Cunningham and Swarbrick, I think) which was a Blackpool brewery. If you remember Sam Tetsil's butchers shop between Great Acre and Vine St., it was almost opposite that. Seem to remember Sherrington's also having a branch in the Makinson Arcade.
