I know it says Cooperas on the photo Ron, but it is actually Copperas Lane.
Ron What a great photo. Is the building still standing do you know.
Yep definitely Cooperas Lane, Haigh postaly used 1909
Copperas is another word for iron sulphate, used in various industrial processes. The name of the lane must have some connection with the old industries round Haigh. I believe "Cooperas" on the card is just a spelling mistake.
John - I understand Copperas was processed in the Haigh, Aspull and Blackrod areas up until the early 19th century.
An interesting article on the subject can be found in Issue 46 of 'Past Forward' magazine.
Thanks Mick. I've just googled that article and it makes an interesting and informative read. Nice to learn something new.
Correct John and Mick. that's where the name of the lane comes from. Spelling mistake on the card.
Yon road favvers a bit slutchy.
