Mining

brilliant Ron - my dad worked there and at the nearby Bridge Pit - the brick structure protecting the old shaft is still standing - suffered badly with flooding I seem to recollect - as kids we used to watch my dad and his workmates being lowered down - must have been mined for hundreds of years as dad used to tell about blasting exposing old workings/tools and even the odd skeleton!
That wagon looks like a Chinese six. Not unique, but a tad bit unusual for a tipper nonetheless.

You are right about the flooding. One of my Uncles from Aspull was a miner in the Dairy pit and reckoned it was the worst place he ever worked. I seem to recall him saying that the seams were very this as well. Very hard work.
Scholes Malc, I think that the Dairy pit was an old mine that had been closed but was re opened in the early 1950s. It closed around 1964. Chris Southworth will know more about it if he's on line.
When Dairy Pit closed the men were transferred to Parkside.
