Brilliant photo of a bygone era Tom, Reg number is KLG107Y.
Good pic, nice man Mr David Cherry, sadly not with us now.
This photograph was taken at the bottom end of Leopold Street before the bollards were installed. The bollards, placed at both ends of the street, were apparently installed by Dave Whelan when he had the old Triangle Valve West Works factory; these were to prevent burglars getting an easy access to the main road at Lamberhead Green, and a quick getaway, apparently...But, the boy racers had other ideas: on any night you can see or hear them tearing down from top to bottom...Whelan abandoned the old factory, and we were left with no shortcut from Enfield Street. The racers are still here, and so probably are the burglars. So much for forward planning...
Which Gentleman is MR Cherry?
Yes Jarvo, and mr Whelan thought the no through road didn't apply to him, he got past the bollards by driving over the field.
I believe Mr Cherry is the one on the right.
Yes, Mr David Cherry is on the right.
Surely it was a planning decision with careful consideration given by the highways department. I think you may find that the bollards were to stop large HGVs trying turn turn into Leopold St from Enfield Street which, given the size of some of them would be nigh impossible. All the other accesses to the Lambourhead Industrial Park that are now blocked would suffer from the same problems. If Whelan did make the suggestion then you could say he was doing all the local residents a favour!!
I don't think people realise how big a company it was, I believe they made buses for most of the bus companies in the UK and abroad as well. All that out of Enfield Street.
Wrong, Dave...Not all local residents. You see, if you live in Smethurst Lane, then all the traffic that used to take a short cut to avoid Enfield St lights, by way of Leopold Street, now choose to race up the Lane. The lane being the new short cut...Remember, there are bollards on the bend at Chapel Street as well. Smethurst Lane is now an A road in a residential area. Fact!
We are supposed to be commenting on this WIGAN bus, not streets and roads that takes it away from the subject. You lot are boring! What a wonderful photo Tom.
Don't forget Wigan Lane Depot, lectriclegs.
Colin, they only started to get the big, and more, orders when they extended Enfield street.
Cheers Lectriclegs.
Yes that is / was Dave cherry. Nice enough guy. At Enfield street We used to have a petrol pump just near the paint shop. He was once going to the motor show in his maroon jag / Daimler and someone only filled up one of the two fuel tanks and he ran out of petrol. I know who it was but cant say here as he may still be alive.
