The old black path which is still there, think that is St Aidens School at the top.
The photograph is actually looking in the direction of St Aidan's Primary School and the Shopping Precinct at Winstanley, the Primary School looks like it was under construction, at the time the photo was took, which would have been circa 1971 and that pathway is still there today, it starts on Holmes House Avenue, opposite the entrance to the precinct and then it crosses Melrose Drive and from there it runs alongside Dereham Way, which is where the bungalows are located in the top right corner of the picture, from there the path runs parallel with the Anthorn Road Estate, at the side of the houses, ending in Anthorn Road itself, just before the junction with Clap Gate Lane.
At the time the photograph was taken, Holmes House Avenue and Highfield Grange Avenue, had not been joined up and it was not possible to drive through Winstanley, from Pemberton Road, to the Marus Bridge Roundabout.
Brilliant Cindy. We used to call this path the Don Wood path - I've never seen this picture before, but I'm chuffed with this. Thanks very much for submitting it.
Used this path to cycle home from highfield school to marus bridge.
wow long time ago, used to go on my motocrosser along them tips, and they had some roads laid out on the fields on the left with tennis court markings on them, brings back happy memories this
That's the house that I grew up in, just to the right of St Aidens Primary School, that's being built. It's on the corner of Melrose and Dereham way. My bedroom is the window on the left, we lived there from 1973 :-)
