Darlington St is not on this map when was it built.
Keith This was our playground as children and in addition to the remnants of the Pits and Chemical works there was a cottage " Johnny Walkers" and the remains of a foundry .
which I was told was Hulme and Kings and they made Railway Locomotives
Darlington Street East isn't there but Birkett Bank Colliery is.
Ken, on the equivalent map of 1894, Darlington Street East is built up as far as just past Cambridge street. The continuation eastwards to Birkett Bank is shown by dotted lines, so must have been planned to be continued.
we used to catch newts and tadpoles in that pond at jonnie walkers when we was kids
Recently I did some research into a family who were resident in the lower end of Darlington St (house number in the 'odd' 60s) in 1868, so that part existed then.
I always though Broom St was really Bolton St. And folk called it Broom st because of the pub the shovel and broom on the corner
interesting to see all the various side channels to the nearby works and pits . we tend to think of the canal as straight sided for miles
