I would have been at this game. Netherfield are attacking and I can make out Latics players (L to R); 10 Jim Fleming, Bobby Todd (socks rolled down), 7 Derek Temple, 4 Gordon Milne and 9 Geoff Davies. Can’t make out the others. I don't remember any stone throwing at the coaches.
This was played on 5th September 1970 and Latics won 2-1 (Temple and og). We always got stones thrown at the coaches after this match. I once remember Alan Fairhurst already laid down in the aisle as I got on the coach after a game.
What a lovely picturesque ground, and there seems to be a decent crowd on. It must have been great following Latics away in these non league days. Lovely photographs.
Is that the Gordon Milne who played for Liverpool?
Yes - Giovanni. And the Derek Temple that played for Everton.
Yes, it was Sir Gordon Milne of Liverpool and England. His father also managed the Latics. Picturesque grounds but no stewards or police protection and it could get rather dodgy.
Nearly always got coaches bricked here, they used to hide behind gravestones. Brilliant photograph, great, great days
The very same Gordon Milne, ex-Liverpool and England. His description on the Liverpool website is "Milne's play was uncomplicated and others prospered around his unselfish play." I always thought he was similar in style to Paul Madeley of Leeds another fine footballer.
The very same Gordon Milne that 'nutmegged' City's hard man Mike Doyle in the famous 1971 FA Cup tie.
The good old days we signed geoff wright from them goog lad
