Latics at Netherfield September/October 1970. Geoff Davies watched by ex-Latics legend Alf Craig playing for the home team. Doug Coutts at rear. Bobby Todd or is it David Breen behind Davies? Is it Kenny Morris on the left?
What a great photo.
I had just started to watch the Latics a couple of years previous. I would say Geoff Davies up front and Bobby Todd at the rear.
And its a knocking bet that Billy Sutherland and Ian Gillibrand would be in the line up if they were available for selection. Sadly, Ian died young. He would have been in his early 40's. Great servant to the club he was.
The extreme left Latics player(actually in the middle of the picture)is unmistakably Billy Sutherland...The haircut gives it away.
A great place to go was Netherfield you could watch the match from the club, but we had to dodge the bricks when we were leaving, they used to hide in a graveyard that we had to pass and then throw them at the coach.
It was on Septemmber 5, 1970. Latics won 2-1. Gordon Milne's team went on to win the Northern Premier League that season plus the great display in 1-0 cup defeat at Man City.
Lineup and goalscorers anyone?
Jarvo, I think you are mistaken. I think it is Kenny Morris, as he is positioned in the right back area and because it looks like him.
Latics: Reeves, Morris, Sutherland, Milne, Coutts, Gillibrand, Temple, Todd, Davies, Fleming and Breen. Netherfield were managed by ex-Latics player Les Campbell and in their team that day were Latics men Halsall, Taylor, Craig, Lynn and Sandiford. Latics were lucky to win with a Thompson own goal 8 minutes from time but went top of the table. Temple had scored after 2 mins and Wroth equalised (61)- Att: 1,578
