Top shot Keith. In the above right hand corner is the edge of Lea Wood, reputed to be a strip of ancient forest that has never been cut .Any students of natural history confirm or otherwise?
This is a wonderful photo, the only pity is the bad state that has become it. You would imagine if the authorities that own it were to do it up it could well be the jewel in Wigans Crown from a.winstanley.
I had a auntie lived on the rd from Windy Arbour to the Saddle, I forgotten the name. Anyway from her upstairs you could look across all the grounds to the Hall.. A neighbor of hers, when I was about 10, (so in the early fifties ), would take me to see the Hall... I have a memory of seeing a large stone Lion, reared up on it's back legs...Does anyone know of this Lion or did I imagine it.. As everyone else says, it is awful that such a beautiful place should have been let fall into such disrepair... There were so many Halls and places of interest in Wigan and district that should have been kept for Historical purposes. So sad everything is gone...
Janet. Your lionman was real. It still watches over the pet cemetary not far from the main hall.
Thank you Gary... 60 years ago, so I wasn't sure if the old brain was playing tricks on me... I used to love going over there, but the Lion is all I remember.....
As a child in the fifties I remember going to Winstanley Hall just before Mothering Sunday. All along the drive was a multitude of daffodils and children were invited to pick a bunch (free) to take home for their mothers.
