Being born and bred in Martland Mill, this image brings back happy carefree childhood memories of growing up in the 70's, having the 'gant' and the 'red sea' as my playgrounds - happy days indeed :)
Taken before Scot Lane was joined up to Beech Hill Ave at the traffic lights.
My Mum used to drive me through Martland Mill nearly every day back in the early 1960s when taking me from our house in Baytree Road in Beechill (above the top of this photo) to my grandparents' house in Helvellyn Road in Pemberton. I was only about 3 or 4 years old but I remember that journey very well. I thought it was an interesting place but I never knew much about it or its history.
In 1968 traffic going to Shevington would go along Woodhouse Lane that ran next to the canal. Woodhouse Drive would be build some years later. Also the Wigan outer ring road that started at the Saddle juction, on a new Robin Park Road, then onto Scot Lane, Beech Hill Avenue, and Spencer Road, finishing at the Cherry Gardens pub. There would be two new railway bridges built, over the West Coast main line, and under the Southport line.
