Why are the bus and car facing the wrong way?

Comment by: Garry on 18th August 2014 at 19:20

Because they are parked up!

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 18th August 2014 at 19:43

Wigan's first Leyland Atlantean entered service in 1968.

No such thing as facing the wrong way...the bus is parked in that position for the photo-shot, this bus is showing the new on/off doors, the first of its type.

Would this have been bodied at Northern Counties? Their works was just down the road from the Plantation Gates.

When selnec (later gmpte) took over the running of Wigan's buses all those modern buses got taken away and replaced with old bangers from elsewhere

Comment by: Neil on 19th August 2014 at 21:13

Gerry: Incorrect, these buses stayed in Wigan and never got moved anywhere else until withdrawal in the mid 80's

Comment by: Garry on 20th August 2014 at 19:43

I don't understand you Neil...I made comment to Alan H.

Neil is correct. There is a misconception that GMPTE moved all of Wigan's newest buses were shipped out in favour of older buses. None of Wigan's buses that the Corporation bought after 1964 were moved away from Wigan. In fact Wigan received newer buses from elsewhere and brand new vehicles at a faster rate than Wigan Corporation would have been able to do. This particular bus was the 23rd double decker with seperate entrance and exit doors. Wigan also had 14 single deckers with the same layout by the time this picture was taken. The bus pictured was the very first of Leyland's updated Atalantean, the AN68 and they bought 9 more after this. The location was a favoured spot for Northern Counties to take 'official' photographs of buses they had built.

Wigan Corporation 9-NEK 9K Leyland Atlantean AN68/2R was delivered in June 1972 and withdrawn from service by GMT in October 1985.
