Hindley North Station (Disused Platforms) 1986
Hindley North Station (Disused Platforms) 1986

A 1986 photo taken of the disused fast line platforms at Hindley Station (formerly Hindley North Station).
Photo taken from outside the Hindley Perway cabin this view is of the fast line platforms, actually looking under Ladies Lane bridge towards Crow Nest Junction.
Up until the closure of the fast lines in 1966 this is where the express trains to & from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Exchange used to run through, with the fast lines being used to kind of "overtake" the much slower all stations "stopper" services.
Only Hindley North,Atherton Central,& Pendleton Broad Street,Stations had fast line & slow line platforms serving all four lines.
All the other stations on the line from Wigan to Windsor Bridge had platforms serving the slow lines only.

Since the removal of the fast lines from Hindley to Windsor Bridge, only Hindley still has it`s fast line platforms in situ (still remaining in a state of disuse).

This was how they looked in 1986

I am pretty sure that the large iron pipe in the photo between ladies Lane Bridge & the Station Footbridge is the Rivington Aquaduct?

I always thought the line closed in 1969, Baldylocks, and lifted in 1971. I assume the Pemberton loop was used for the fast trains to Liverpool Exchange and cut Wallgate station out to save time.
Excellent photo, thanks for showing.

Baldylocks: if you click on to places, then Hindley 218, Item number 5467. Karen Smith's photo of Hindley North from 1956. It shows the same location but looking towards Iron Bridge. Cheers.

If you look at this photo and the photo Colin Harlow refers to, it reflects the ephemeral nature of things. I find this photo absolutely fascinating, when one considers the dynamic role this station played at one time and now to see it, totally derelict. It is truly a pity that "change is inevitable", I wonder sometimes, if all this change is for the better!

condition.

You're absolutely right, Syd...A sad end.
Liverpool Exchange station closed in April 1977.
Here are more Item numbers of Hindley North if anyone is interested. They are: 3396..24075..18034.

Thats a fantastic photo Baldylocks, althought sad that the lines have gone, but a great bit of history saved. Whats it look like today>

why can't they make it into a road.
But I'm not sure where its from and where it goes to?

Hi Colin,
As far as I`m aware it was the bit from Hindley No2 Box to Pemberton Junction (the switchback)that lingered on until 1969 & I think that this bit in the photo went along with the rest of the fast lines in 1966.

As for how it looks now,it has not really changed all that much, might be a little more overgrown but up until the early 2000s was still used as Per way road access to the line between Hindley Stn & Crow Nest.

just out of shot on the approach to this bridge is where my dad started on the p-way back in the 1970's.nowadays you can only go so far up this old track bed because of all the trees that have grown

The direct line from Hindley to Pemberton (thats this one) closed on the 14th July 1969.
