The Infant Head Teacher in 1957 was Miss Eleanor Johnson, and the Junior School Head Teacher was Mr Birch. Our first infant teacher was Mrs Sherrington. The School Secretary was Mrs Melling, who always had a kind word for any child who was upset or distressed. Mr Tasker was the school caretaker.
Mr Birch was good man and a great head teacher. He was particularly kind to me when I had been informed that I was the only candidate from St Marks to fail the second part of my 11 plus, after successfully completing the first part. Mr Birch was a widower and eventually married one of the Junior School teachers, Mrs Silcock, whose daughter, Gillian also attended St Mark's School. He lived near the Upholland monument and was also the lay reader at St. Mark's Church.

Lots of kids passed the first half of the 11 plus. Not many made it through the second half though. You needn't have felt bad, Michael...

I adored Mr Birch. a lovely, kind headmaster. (one snowy day he brought a magnifying glass into the playground, and showed us how each and every flake had a different pattern!!!) Always the teacher I suppose but it was a big moment for me, it blew my mind away, I was so excited I never forgot it.
