Lowes - an old Wigan Family shop sadly missed.
How time flies!! Hard to believe that the underground toilets had gone by the early 80s. Anyone any idea just when they disappeared?
Remember shopping at Lowes with my mum....we used to pop in and look at the dresses....Memories....:)
Derekb. You may remember. My good friends, Jimmy, and Ronnie Williams, their father, Jimmy, was the attendant at those toilets, in the late forties, and early fifties. he had a peg leg, salt of the earth. A great family. None of them are with us today. May they, Rest in Peace.
A.W., it it's final years Lowes had ceased to be family owned and had become part of the Greenwoods (men's outfitters) group, which I think were Yorkshire based. Albert, I vaguely remember the toilet attendant with the peg (or, as they would politically correct say today prosthetic) leg, but didn't know the family.
Lowe's, Pendlebury's, Oxley's: those were the days.
DerekB, the underground toilets were not actually demolished until the late 1990s or thereabouts though they had not been used for many years before that.
I remember father christmas at Lowes each December year.
Thanks for the info A.W. The toilets must be obscured in this shot by the red car.
Yeah Garry. I do as well. Came back to me.
