there was a similar engine at Stones Park Colliery. The drive ropes were made of cotton and were lubricated with graphite powder. Stones also had a similar engine that drove the underground haulage system. There were ropes going down No2 pit which wound round a C wheel at the pit bottom and this engaged the haulage system by means of a clutch wheel, operated by a minder.

Would the ropes have actually been lubricated, or something put on them to stop them slipping?
