This is John Pit on a Sunday in 1955. The photo is looking towards Giants Hall Coll and the West Coast Main Line at Rylands Siding.
In the foreground is John pit shed with three locos standing outside. To the right are workshops and the pit lodge, further along are empty wagons in the siding.
Standish Washer chimney can be seen to the right and top centre you can just make out the chimney at Giants Hall Coll
Cliff, did you work at John Pit??
The long low building on the right, is the stores, run by Mr Sixsmith.
WOut of sight behind the stores was the timber/materials yard.
Where the wagons are parked is the platelayers cabin & repair shop.
The little pointed top structure in the distance is the Wr Memorial,
& the line running behind the loco shed goes up to the Standish Hall Drift screens.
Above it is Taylor Pit dirt rook
This pic has been posted before, by Winder, I believe
It doesn't matter how many times they've been posted, Art, I for one can see them over and over again, just like other railway/pit enthusiasts on here.
KenR No, I didn't work at John pit, just take an interest in the local industrial past. Art is the one that worked there.
Art. I was looking to see if I'd posted the pic before but couldn't see it anywhere.
It appears on the cover of the book about this topic, which is maybe from where Art is remembering it.
The photograph actually belongs to the Industrial Railway Society. I asked for their permission to use it on the front cover of a DVD from a few years back.
I was there today - how things can change..
