A Southport to Manchester train passing Crow Nest Junction, Hindley in January 1987.

The train is travelling towards Lostock Junction and Bolton. The lines to the right go to Manchester via Atherton.

At that time, the train service between Wigan and Manchester was only one per hour for most of the day, and you rarely had trouble finding a seat. Unlike today, there was no choice of destination stations in Manchester – all trains ran to Manchester Victoria only.

that was the trouble from jan 1st 1948 the railways where not run has a business, now its a business and trains run to where their's a profit.before anyone gets on his high horse, thats what used to happen before jan 1st 1948.

The line curving away to the right, the Atherton line, was once four track all the way to Pendleton.

Cheers Cullie, just wondered if the T3s this week were possibly anything to do with the imminent demolition of crow nest box,as I understand that Walkden & Atherton have already been demolished as they are more than 12 feet from the running line so they can be demolished without a line blockage, however crow nest is a different thing as it`s right by the running line & will require a line blockage to allow it be disposed of.

Let me know on here if you hear of anything regarding the box at crow nest getting pulled down,as i`d like to get a shot of it for old times sake.
Ta Cullie.

Anyone interested in the impressive collection of ironmongery that used to be in place at Crow Nest can take a look at the second picture in this link......
