Mr.& Mrs. Dale lived in one of the houses to the left. Near the other end, there was another family I knew from Zion Methodist Chapel, but I cannot remember their name.
Tom. Walked along this street on many occasions, to Dr Duffy's surgery, both for myself, and for my parents. He also had a surgery in the street next to St Mary's School(as was), in Lower Ince.
i remember this st as i am a platt wasser on the right was a old freind who i use to go school will jackie gore barry anders live there 2 & ernie brown them where the days wish thay were back
Dr Duffy's partner at the practice was Dr Murphy, who was our family doctor when we lived in Lower Ince. Dr Murphy was a chain smoker and he had no qualms about smoking in front of his patients. His ash tray was always overflowing. He was a good doctor though and a nice man.
This photo brings back many memories, my Grandma used to live at number 10 Bank Street. She thought Dr Duffy was wonderful, in those days the doctors stayed at the same practise for all their career, not like today. I think Doctor Duffy had a daughter who was a doctor.
Margaret. Wasn't Dr Duffy's daughter, who was also a doctor, a partner in the same practice, and wasn't she married to Dr Murphy?
Margaret, having thought about it, I am now relatively confident that Dr Duffy's daughter married Dr O'Brien
Albert, I think Dr Duffy's daughter who, as you say was also a doctor but I think she was married to Dr O' Brien. I remember going to her for some slimming tablets but she wouldn't give me any!
Doctors Duffies daughter was Marlene. She did marry Doctor O Brien
Dr Marlene Duffy. Seem to remember her having a surgery in the front room of a terraced house in Lily Lane bamfurlong during the 60's. She lived in Hall Lane Hindley nr golf club in the 80's.
I remember a very nice family called Finch who were members of St. Nathaniel's. They lived either right at the end of Neville Sreet, or just round the corner on Walthew Lane. I have a dvd of St. Nathaniel's walking days in the sixties with members of the Finch family taking part. They had a son Nigel and a daughter Vicky but I can't remember the names of the rest of the family.
I remember when I was demobbed from the R.A.F. I took a temporary job at Central Wagon Works, Ince. My job was spading furnace ash onto a truck, to be deposited in another location. After a fortnight, the pain in my back was agony. Expecting a sympathetic ear from Dr Marlene, I didn't get one, her recommended cure for it, was, "keep on with the spade work". No sick note.
I know where that 'other location' was, Albert... I spent a week last month shifting tons of ash from under the old base of the garage I demolished at our new home. Funnily enough, your aching back was in the load, too!
Funny enough Reverend, a couple of times last month, I felt a nasty twinge in my lower back. Now I know whom to blame.
sorry it wasent jackie gore that lived there it was malcom worgon & christeen she no longer with us now RIP
Regarding Maggie's commenr about Mr & Mrs Dale in the houses on the left. The other family living further up the street with Zion connections might be Tom Jennings and his wife. He was a coal merchant and his lorry was often used as a platform for the church ministers when the Methodist churches assembled on the land at the rear of the King Billy on the annual walking day
I remember spending the first few years of our married life in Neville Street. My wife had gone into the Estate Agent and asked for a "cheap mansion". We went to look that night and decided to buy.
I think on one side of us was the Mitchell family and on the other the Penny family.
Very good memories.
then there was a chip shop at the end of the street
The car nearest to the camera could be my Austin A40. I married Jean Darbyshire and lived with her parents Cilla and James at 43 Neville Street when we first married.
