He landed at Normandy on D Day but he would never speak about his experiences in France and Germany, only to say that later in the war, he lost his best friend Jack Bretherton at Arnhem.
I have my grandad's "France and Germany Star" medal as my good luck charm and whenever I think I am facing adversity, I take it out, look at it and realise that I will NEVER face anything remotely as difficult as he did.
He was demobbed age 26 on the 18th April 1945 and transferred to the army reserve on the 17th Jan 1946.
Any connexion with the Finch family of Holt Street Ince?
Derek
My cousin John Bretherton was killed at Arnhem. His son, my cousin Larry, grew up without his father. I wonder if this is the same man your Grandad knew. John was in the 1st Parachute Brigade. He was killed, shot in the back..in hand to hand fighting near the school next to the Bridge at Arnhem. I went twice with my mother to lay flowers on
his grave in the War Cemetery there.
Neil, my grandad was from Newtown, but I found some of my relatives living in Broom Street (it doesn't exist now but it was near Forge Street, off Manchester Road in Ince) so if you know some Finchs' they could be a distant relation.
Tricia, it could very well be your cousin John (Jack) Bretherton.
I believe they were both in the Royal Engineers stationed somewhere in Scotland, when volunteers were requested to join a military operation to parachute into Europe which they thought would shorten the war, ending it by Christmas.
My grandad said that he was not going to volunteer or jump out of any plane, but Jack was fed up of being in Scotland and because they thought the war was soon coming to an end, wanted to see some action before it ended.
My grandad said Jack (John) Bretheton's name is on the memorial outside Wigan Parish Church, although I have never checked whether it is true.
My grandmother was a Finch from Bridgewater st Ince her father was Christopher and his father was James or Thomas {i think} i know she had relations in other streets in ince i think we may be related.
Hi joymc, my great grandmother was called Jane Finch (nee Hilton) and her father was Christopher Hilton.
My family tree is on Ancestry.co.uk but looking at all the branches that I have managed to complete, I do not know how we can be related?
