A lovely part of Wigan's former glory. How many Northern towns had something like this?
When did this stop running? Lads used to jump on the back and get a free ride.
Is this area still as glorious? I frequently walked this path to Haigh Hall, with my girl, who was soon to be,and still is, my wife. It is fifty odd years ago now. Happy memories.
I remember the tractor so well, especially the original one with the canvas roof. I remember the slope just after you had paid your threepence to the conductor, (occasionally my friend Sheila's Uncle, so we didn't pay at all!),the sudden rush of wind and the shaded ferns at the side of the road, then rattling through the cool, shady plantations and alighting in hot sun on the Hall Drive.....Magic!
Got around to commenting on this pic ....what great memories in this photo....this is how it was when I was a kiddie.....thank you :-)
It was indeed magical, the trip seemed to go on for ages and I loved every minute of it. The tractor was still going in the mid 70s and I think it may have been in the 80s.
Weren't the original tractors, in the very early 1950's, simply ordinary agricultural, ie 'Massey-Ferguson' type tractors?
These tractors were slow. Had no problem jumping on and off sometimes laden with golf clubs!
Brings back really happy memories. I was a teenager in the early 60's and loved this place.
