Wasn't that a beautiful building..I wonder why on earth it had to go.
It was a victim of the 'Lets get rid of the Direct Grant school' that labour supported in the early 70's. I started in the 1st year in 1970, then the whole year got moved to Tommy Moore in 73, and the following year that 3rd year moved en masse to John Fisher. I think the option was 'well you could go independent fee paying' but the vast majority of parents would not have been able to afford it. hence it closed in 1974. At the time of closure it did have many beautiful features inside, but there was an awful lot of cracks in the plaster, ie money would have had to have been spent. In those days you didn't preserve facades or convert to units or appartments.
Does anyone remember Sr Josephine Fishwick who, I believe, was a teacher there?
Hi Carol!! My sister Josephine Hayes went to the Convent during the 50s to early 60s....she really loved it there.....so sad they pulled it down.....
Thanks for posting these pages, Carol. It's a lovely view of the building, especially as there are no cars, no yellow lines and no street clutter.
