The mill on Castle Hill was quite an impressive building that must have employed hundreds of men and women in it's day.
I like the old industrial stuff.
Thanks for putting it on, Maurice
According to images on Google Earth/Maps, part of the old wall is still there, it's behind a bus stop. Further images of an old factory wall/gatepost of Lowe Mill in Hindley, can still be seen. It seems to be private property now.
Raymond; Just had a peep on Google street view and saw the old wall on Castle Hill. It's the one that joins up with the Sub-Station.
What's more interesting is the gatepost you mentioned down Lowe Mill lane.
The 1907 map says it used to be a Cotton Mill and it shows a Mill race and reservoirs at the back which look to be fed by Bordane Brook.
Did you see the swastika on the old gatepost? I'm sure the "artist" has got it upside down!
Yes, I knew the swastika was the wrong way round, did you know that about the time the mills were operating, the British Government issued war savings coupons with the swastika stamp.

Just had a look at the white swastika, Raymond.
The page gives a date of 1916. Bet they never dreamed that 20 odd years later it would be a symbol that was hated in nearly every country in Europe.
Fascinating stuff.
My cousin and myself used to save waste paper, newspapers etc., and when we had enough we would take it up to the Castle Hill Mill, they would buy it by weight.
Hi all,
Does anyone have any photos of the mill from any time, I live where the mill was and I'm trying to piece it all together.
Cheers
