this picture brings many happy childhood memories for me.we would spend all our summer school holidays around here, climbing trees paddling in the brook ,fishing for tadpoles ,we used to take bottles of water and jam butties for our picnics, then we would go to the powderworks and ask them to refill our water bottles, ...yes very happy memories
Great picture! Thanks for sharing.
Times were certainly different...I too remember going off on my bike for the day with a friend, a bottle of pop & jam butties...if I was lucky I might get a biscuit as well. We thought nothing of knocking on someone's door for a drink of water.
I know nothing of Hawley Hall looks like it was a fine place.
I used to deliver papers to the hall, in the mid 60s. The foundations are still there, amidst all the overgrowth and rubbish. It was a fine building in it's time.
Used to raid the trees in front of the hall around bondfire night best pears in Worsley Mesnes better than St Margarets home Goose Green this was in the early sixties
My mother in laws stepdad owned hawkley hall and the land, sold to broseleys in early 70's. Jack Jameson
A girl who lived there was in our class at St Joseph's. Late forties I think. I think her name was Sylvia.
jack jameson had two daughters,Brenda who was my friend at school, St james ,and i think the other one was barbara who was a bit younger , and they had an older brother Frank
The daughters were Brenda and Dorothy
What a lovely way to spend a wet afternoon, looking at these old photos and remembering my Childhood.
I used to go and play around the haal, and as mw says, we would take our bottle of water and a jam buttie, for our picnic :) There used to be a rope swing near the brook, I remember falling in so many times, usually due to Ian Finch pushing me lol. I also went to St James School, and a few years ago my Mum sent me a cutting from the Wigan Observer where I along with some Friends was named as we cleaned up the area around the hall. When I was little I used to dream of being a Princess and living somewhere just like Hawkley Hall. Thank you for posting these photos and bringing all the wonderful memories flooding back :)
