Just trying to get my bearings...did the road run behind the Baxters building & on up to the cinema & hairpin bend?
My sister had a school friend at Upholland Grammar, her name was Yvonne Baxter & she lived down the lane opposite the Lyric Cinema, her Dad had a business I think, wonder if it was anything to do the the building in the pic. Nice view.

That's right Helen, the road is Parlaiment Street and runs on to Grove Road near the old Lyric.

The Baxters building was knocked down a few months ago. In the 70's and 80's it used to be Dingle belles car spares shop.

Arnold Baxter had the off licence near the church. Les Baxter also had an electric shop My Mum and Dad got my first record player from there. It must have been Christmas 1966 as I can remember getting "Green green grass of home." One of the first records I ever got.

That's right Jimmy, Reg baxter's old shop is now a private house though it was an antique shop called Lancashire Bygones for quite a few years. Arnold Baxter still had the outdoor license/general shop till the late 80s when he retired. It was taken over by the Parker family till it closed in the mid 90s. Lawrence Baxter used to have a shop at Holland Moor near UpHolland Labour club.

I think I got a bit mixed up Les Baxter used to live across from us. Next door to the big farmhouse on Alma Hill. Reg did have the electric shop. You might know this D in the early to mid 60's did he sell records.

I don't know Jimmy, I remember him doing the TV rental, general electric repairs and batteries, it was the first place I saw a colour television in the late 60s! I too remember Leslie Baxter having the farm on Alma Hill.

My Uncle Reg did sell records from his shop for a time. He had the cellar converted for the purpose. At the age of about 10 I helped him set it up and then queued up the next day so that I could be the first customer. Uncle Reg's grandson is Richard Ashcroft of The Verve.

Used to live in the corner boutique shop, two doors up from ha reds and next to peters the cobblers. Baxters store was where my mum did most of her shopping and Arnold was always the most pleasant and friendliest shopkeeper you could ever meet.
