Darren, very interesting photographs, both this and the one on Standishgate have you any idea on dates?
Doesn't that look just lovely, I can't say I remember that, I do remember coming down from Wigan through Goose Green, there being houses all the way down to what is now the roundabout and ended with a small petrol station.. Then there was nothing but fields all the way to what is now the roundabout at the M6 on/off ramps....Lovely photo Darren.. Thanks for sharing...
I can't orientate myself with this photo. I was brought up in Marus Bridge. Isn't this actually in the middle of where the dual carriageway is now?
Is that the path that lead to Tan Pit Wood and eventually Pony Dick ?
Unless I miss my guess, this is all around where Marus Avenue is now.
Superb picture Darren. I now live in the row of terraced houses in the background of this pic. I was born in 1950 and remember the old junction at Marus Bridge before the new road. The house in this picture was gone by the time I became a teenager, and I don't remember it at all. Thanks for putting it on.
If what you say is correct Mick, then this is Delph House farm which was falling apart when I was last home at Easter last year.
Had a look at an old map of the area and think this could possibly be Delph House
great photo darren, i lived in marus ave,my dad was tommy jones, but i cant remember this scene , what year was it ?
i think Delph cottage was in Marus ave , right opp. where i used to live,
refering back to the old map there shows two buildings one being Delph house farm ... which is the building on Marus Ave that was only demolished a couple of years ago ... the other being Delph house which was situated at the crossroads of Poolstock lane and Warrington rd ... this looks possible as the houses that you can see on Poolstock lane look like the ones still standing just before you get to Marus Bridge roundabout ... hope this is helpful ...
thats not poolstock lane in the background
delph cottage was knocked down last year new houses have appeared.
looking at the picture of marus bridge r/about posted previously circa 1963,i would say thats a view from what is now crestwood ave
I am sure those houses in background are the one near to the island at Marus Bridge, but I don't remember that cottage, What a beautiful cottage it was. Can't ever say I remember it being on Marus Ave either.
The cottage looks at the side of the dirt track leading to the other side of marus ave.
That place is exactly where it says it is, at the end of Poolstock Lane, if you go down Poolstock Lane, when you get to junction with the roundabout, if you look to the left there is a grassed area with some trees and that is where the farmhouse was located, the semi detached houses on Marus Avenue and Poolstock Lane had not been built when the photo was taken, however the houses in the background on Poolstock Lane had been built and can be seen on street view on google earth.
thats right.PP.the gap in the terrace houses is leading through to Ruskin ave.
to MW,You are right this is not Delph House Farm, that was in Marus ave where my uncle lived (Horace Wadsworth),across from (Tommys Jones) house.I remember tommy very well..missing him and his wine !!!his back garden backed on to the back garden of 370 poolstock lane where i lived.
Darren i do remember my dad talking about you and how you used to visit him from time to time . long time ago. hope your keeping well
Bob, when was this building knocked down then? My parents moved into their house on Coppice Drive in 1963 and they never mentioned a building on the spare land there and I certainly don't remember it. The only building I remember was the pit shaft on the other side of that land.
I've just looked at the 1911 Census for Delph House which shows that it was then divided into three dwellings.
In 1 Delph House are the Derbyshires, a widow and her two children. In 2 Delph House are five Catteralls and a boarder. At No. 3 there are seven Prescotts. Sixteen of them packed in there altogether!
I was born in 1938 and lived opposite Barkers Farm. Post war, these cottages had been demolished. We kids used to play
here, we called it "The Dump"
