Jack attended Wigan Grammar School and was killed at the Battle of Alamein on 2nd November 1942 during Montgomery's "will accept 100% casualties" Operation Supercharge to break through enemy lines, which eventually succeeded. He is buried in Egypt. Peter the son was also killed in the 2nd World War off the coast of Normandy when his flakship came under attack on 17th August 1944. He was listed as missing presumed killed in action.
Peter and Minnie became Mayor and Mayoress of Blackpool (1952-1953) - the year when Blackpool won the FA Cup (The Matthews Final). Pathe News recorded the homecoming and welcome by the Mayor, a video of which can be viewed on the Pathe News website.
Did Peter have a sister called Elizabeth ann, who became fairhurst? Trying to trace my great grandmother, and Caroline street is one place she lived.
Peter's sister were called Lydia, Margaret and Ellen. Peter was married to Minnie. Minnie's mother was called Elizabeth Ann (Fairbrother)

Hello John, it is fantastic to see this post and particularly wonderful to see an image of John (aka Jack). As a fellow Fairhurst (with family origins in Haydock), I am sure that our lines are linked in the distant past. Interestingly my father's name is John, my grandfathers' name Jack and my best pal's surname is Rhodes! The reason I write, however, is that my father and I have just returned from a trip to Egypt where we visited the war graves of our relatives who fell in El-Alamein. We noted John Ball Fairhurst on the burial records, and visited his gravestone to pay our respects, alongside taking photographs of the record and his gravestone. I would be more than happy to email these across to you if at all helpful. Best wishes, Tom
I really like these old intergenerational family photo's and the memories they unlock. They convey a real story even if you did not personally know them, Thomas's is especially moving.
