The description is already on the photo, it's the very last BR London Midland-organised Last Day of Steam special from Manchester to Liverpool and Southport & return in 1968, seen here at Wigan Wallgate.

The last day of Steam was actually the weekend after, on August 11th.

A Black Five that escaped the cutter's torch and can still be seen working specials on the main line today. Part of the pool of locos scheduled to work "The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express" tours over The Settle Carlsle Railway in February and March 2013.

Proud to say I was there on that day!!!!! My friend Gary and I ran under the main line bridge to see the first train off to Southport!!! We has stood on the original 'iron bridge',a to listen for for
the trains from Ince. What a memory!!!!!

I think the very last train ran form Liverpool Exchange to Preston, or vice versa!!! I know it arrived at its destination just before midnight!!!! Anyone remember?
