In the foreground is the Queen Victoria Fountain built to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
How odd.....I have been there today with my friend Neil Cain from London; his great-uncle, Hance Cain, is named on the War Memorial. Hance's name is also on the list of names just before you go into St. Wilfrid's Church, (under the 1914-1918 soldiers' names), and also on the banners currently hanging outside the Black Bull pub in the Market Place. Are there any relatives of Hance Cain still in Standish or thereabouts? Neil would be thrilled to find family connections.
In 1845 it had been discovered that the springs at Whittle, near Chorley, were a source of pure quality water. Subsequently, the Whittle Springs Brewery established on the site. It prospered for more than half a century until 1928, when the brewery and 54 pubs were acquired by the ever-growing Matthew Brown company.
Didn,t there used to be another pub attached back to back with the Globe Keith? The Globe address would have been High St and the other pub Church St. I remember the main entrance to the Globe being on High St in the 50s but now it is on the side facing the Memorial Garden. There is a door on the side in this photo but i cant remember it being used then, but maybe i,m wrong.
I remember my elder brother finding a £5 (lion)note stuffed in that fountain thing in the the fifties,a lot of money in them days.
Roy, I moved to Standish in 1976 and the entrance to the Globe on the High St. was still in use for a good number of years after that.
Roy is correct. The Globe was at 98 High Street with an entrance facing the Police Station in addition to the present one facing the War Memorial. Conjoined with it was The White Lion at 78 Church Street with its entrance at the back of the building. There was no internal connecting door as the pubs were owned by different breweries.
To complete the set, at 71 Church Street(now a house facing the Fountain) was the Three Crowns, and at 100 High Street(now Co-op Funerals) was the Nag's Head.
