No trees then as there are today, you could actually see the clock those days. Todays trees are a modern day 'Spite Row' and something should be done to reduce them in size or even more drastic action taken.
Hi Keith, I met and spoke with you about a month ago while sitting near Saint Wilfrids. A truly wonderful church and gardens which were pleasing to my eyes. The trees added to the beauty and perhaps an arborist wouldn't go astray but I don't agree that 'drastic' action is necessary Mr Huxley! Thanks for posting this picture Keith, it's nice to see how it looked in the 1930's.
Thank you Frances for your comments, they are very welcome and thank you for affording me my full title, Mr. I appreciate what you,re saying, perhaps you,re correct and cutting them down might be a bit over the top, but they should never have been allowed to become so large in the first place. I am led to believe that the ones inside the church yard belong to the church, obviously, but the ones outside the church wall are the responsibility of the Council. Are you in a position to comment on that Keith please.
Frances, I enjoyed talking to you about the heritage of our Market Place and Standish as a whole, on one of the rare sunny days this summer. You seemed to be enjoying your stay in Standish as part of a wider tour.
As regards the 'obstructive ' trees--personally I belong to the "lop 'em not chop 'em side of the argument! Wigan Council, whose trees they are, obtained planning permission a couple of years ago to "trim them and thin them" but never implemented it!
