Do you have any names or the exact date Ron.Do you know anyone on the photograph?I have a Speech Day programme of about the time.
Hi Anne sorry I don't have any information about the photograph only that it was the Wigan Girls High School. I am just presuming the date, going off the clothes of the people
I was wondering where in Wigan this Queens Hall is?
Market Street.
I went to St Josephs School and this brought it all back again of the time we sang in there,I remember the thrill of singing Land of Hope and Glory..and that was in the 50's.
Phill Taylor,as Irene says,The Qeens Hall is in Market Street, however the
auditorium shown here is no longer there, the facade and the front part of the building were left intact ,but the back including the auditorium were demolished to make way for the bus station.
You're right, Tom, I hadn't thought of that. I went to a similar speech day at The Queens Hall as the girls in the photo when I was at Hindley and Abram Grammar School in the sixties.
Ron was the photo from a newspaper cutting. I was wondering if there was anything to read with it.It would be so good to pick out faces. Thanks
To be honest I don't know where the photograph came from but there was nothing else with it.
I remember that both the Grammar School and High Scxhool had Speech days at Queens Hall. I wonder why they were called " Speech Days" when all they did was to give out prizes.
It's possible that I could be one of the 6th. formers on this photo. I left in 1953.I used to love these occasions, it was so good to sing in that huilding. Thank you for this.
I am on this photo. It must have been 1958 or 1959.
What is your surname Olive and how old would you have been on the photograph. I went to WGHS in 1959.I too used to love these occasions-very special.I am trying to find an old speech day programme. That should be interesting!
Been informed that it could be 1952.
It definitely isn't 1952. I am on this photo wearing 6th form uniform and I only started at the High School in 1953.
wow! i remember the all day practice and having to be very smart for thr Friday evening "Do". the head girl had to ask the Governors if we could have a day off and they always said yes!
The photograph of Speech Day in the Queens Hall with Miss Holland in the centre and Miss Ely at the piano is 1952 because I am in the choir and dressed in my Upper 4 uniform also Judith Partington,Anne Stuart, and Anita Richardson are all dressed the same
