Probably taken in the late 1800s or ealy 1900s. An atmosheric picture showing the cobbled stone roads of Scot Lane and Stanley Road and gas lamps. The Moorgate Inn which is still there is shown on the corner. To the left is now Moorside with bungalows and shops built in the mid 1960s. The terraced houses at the bottom of Stanley Rd and to the left of scot Lane are long gone. Are those railway lines running along the grassed area and across the road? If so what where they for?

The lines will be the mineral railway from the Aspull Pumping Pit.

Cheers Geoff. I live in one of the houses built on the Moor just to the left of the photo. The road is very busy now.

There is a footpath there now which follows the line of the old railway, it crossed Ratcliffe Road and ran through a cutting pass the Wall Hey Chimney on Haigh road and on to Toddington and Meadow Pit.

I used to live Stanley Rd until I was aged 11yrs, we then moved to Holly Road, newly built houses. We used to play in George Marsdens fields and used go potato picking. What an evocative photo, lovely to see. thank you
