The building on the left(Shapiros)was the first night club in Wigan when it opened 1961/1962 as "The Golden Clogg" Matt Monroe was the first artist to appear .Prior to that it was a school of dancing, not sure of the name ,Gee's rings a bell?.
Yes, it WAS Gee's school of dancing. You can just make out some writing on the wall of Shapiro's to the extreme left of the photo; it isn't clear on the screen, but if you walk down King St. West you can just about make out that it said GEE'S SCHOOL OF DANCE.
My mates, and I were taught to dance at Gee's School of Dancing, in the early 50s,in preparation of going on our holidays to the Isle of Man. We mastered the waltz, and the quickstep, but I could never come to terms with the foxtrot. We all sat on chairs around the outside of the dance floor, with our backs to the wall. Either Marion Gee, or her mother, took you on the floor, for your lessons. I can hear Victor Sylvester's orchestra now. Happy days.
I wish they would demolish the Coops building, because I don't like it.
What is it used for now?
in the 60,s the in place ,las vagas club,.
Coops is divided into flats for those of our community who need somewhere to live.....i.e. homeless teenagers
Yes I have memories of this place under several ownerships. My sister went for dancing lessons at the Gee school of Dance. As a young press photographer I was invited to the opening of The Golden Clogg, it was in those days I shop images of Selwyn Mauritius, who had played bongos on the film South Pacific and who's father was President of the Mauritius Isles. Then as The Las Vegas Club during Barbara's days it was the place to be.
I remember hearing the World War 2 air raid sirens being occasionally used 40 years later in the 1980s that were at Coops.
In years to come will todays youngsters have as many memories as we do.
My mum ,Thelma Chadwick always talks about going to gees school of dancing.
