Irene, where the skateboards are now was the tennis court. today, the swings are in a similar position but they face the road. The background in this photo would be the railway embankment. Lovely photo.
think colin may be right about the swings irene an oh my god is that really me !!
Hello Colin! Yes, behind these swings was the railway embankment, but the swings didn't face the road on this photo.....they faced "up the park" towards Can-Row Brook. I thought the tennis-courts, too, were further along, going towards the park entrance. I can see it as if it were yesterday.(just a difference of opinion and of memories, Colin; not falling out....there is enough of that on here!).... and it is lovely to hear from you.
Colin, just realised you meant the swings TODAY face the road, not the ones in the photo.....what a wally I am! Apologies!
Yes, Our Mary, that's you! Lovely to see Ted and Margaret today.
my memory of the swings were where all the kids play area is now and they were side on to main rd swinging toward railway lines or if you were other way swinging towards bowling green, but like you say irene its whats in your memory of it when we were little,i remember those wooden toilets they must have been cemical ones, and the water tap had my mouth under that every time i went to park , happy days x
No offence taken Irene.
Having another look at this photo, just look what you would hit if you fell off the swings, "paving flags" no rubber mats in those days, and people complain about Health and Safety.
You just got up and got back on the swing, Colin! You certainly didn't go "putting a claim in"! Do you all remember Elsie, a lady who was still child-like, and was always on the swings?
Ince in the 1960s, what happy memories. Thanks for bringing them just a bit closer Irene.
Yes always laughing and she'ed talk to everyone, she live in windermere road? (I think)
do you remember the slide, they wouldnt have one that big today like you say with health and saftey, wish someone had a picture of that.
I remember it, but no pic, unfortunately.
ladies name is elsie ,she still goin strong and lives in hindley, had some fun days on slide goin down on grease proof paper to make it dead slippy
Elsie Ashurst was the lady in question, although I was told she was in a home in Ashton, how mony on yu went ont puttin green there, and how mony went ont monkey bars int lads side ut park, as well as trapeze bar, them rings and what must have seemed like the tallest swing int world
We all did, Aitch, all us Ince children. And here, on Wigan World, we can do it all over again!
i remember ince park slide, climbing frames, roundabout, the old wooden shed on the bowling green were they kept the bowls and the golf clubs for the crazy golf which was behind the tennis court, there was a tap on a piece of wood were we could get a drink of water which was a life saver after a game of football, happy days
does any one recall the nickname of the old guy who was the Park attendant, ya darnt put yur fut ont grass,he'd av ya, shouting GERROFF THAT BL---DY GRASS !!!what a nice chap he was ha ha
