Are there any maps on this site, or indeed web illustrating the original course of the river?
This is taken from the front of what was S $ S Motors looking across the road to the back of the Ritz,They were Hillman and Commer agants in the forties Behind thier garage was Grimshaw and Culshawa stables were the milk float horses were kept, and behind them was " A maggot factory" Between the cars and the wall with the razor wire was a passageway whicn ran across the back of the Ritz and up to Standishgate near McClandishes confectioners
The stonework was nothing to do with any Bridge, It was the rear corner of Pendleburies Store yard The bridge was at least 60/70 yards to the left, next to the old Canada Cinema
(W L T now)
The rear of the cinema and bingo hall demolished about 2005 for the Grand Arcade shopping centre, with a white Vauxhall Cavalier and blue Volkswagen Polo. Station Road and Watkin Street have vanished into oblivion.
lan, the River Douglas did run along there until 1892 when it was rerouted to allow the Central Station to be built, so yes Dennis is right in saying that it was the remains of the ancient stone bridge. Read the article in this link.
