Except that it is still raining, most of the time. Never mind, it stops the dust from blowing into our eyes.
My memories of this scene date back to an even earlier time, two of my school pals and I would walk up from Linacre, through the arcade to Woolworths and buy hot Cashew nuts. In those days the building way at the back was the Ritz cinema, across the strret from that was a small cafe owned by our family friend Mrs Anwar Hussein. I don't remember what many of the small shops were along the right hand side but the main sote I thing was Poole's Funrniture
David, Poole's occupied most of the right-hand side of Station Rd. It was a department store like Lowe's but less fancy. I think there were some smaller shops nearer the Ritz. Woolies was on the opposite side, where WHS is in the photo. Station Rd was the last stop for buses from Platt Bridge and Abram (among other places).
There was a jewellers next to the coffee bar, next to the Windy Harbour bus stop and also, later, there was a hairdresser up a flight of stairs. Not sure if this was Andre Bernard or whether Andre Bernard was the one in Crompton Street.
I was standing at the bus stop in November 1963 when someone came along and Said JFK had been shot. At that stage they were saying he was still alive.
