this would have been when the buses took over from the trams.

The unique feature of Wigan Corporation buses is very prominent in this photo the two lights either side of the destination board. No other bus company had this feature.

AlanH - I seem to recall that the lights had green lenses. I was always told as a kid that, in the days when street lighting was not very good, these lights were intended to distinguish an approaching bus at night as a Wigan Corporation service on roads served other bus comnpany routes.

Derekb, they were indeed green ,as you say to distinguish them from Ribble and LUT buses which ran on the same route but could not pick up passengers once they arrived in the Wigan boundaries.

Similarly, the Ribble services going out of Wigan couldn't let passengers off the bus, until it crossed the Borough boundary.
